CMS sets bonus for health professional shortage areas at 10 percent for 2012

Physicians who furnish services to Medicare beneficiaries in federally designated health professional shortage areas (HPSA) are eligible for a 10 percent bonus payment for services furnished from Jan. 1, 2012, to Dec. 31, 2012.

Information about the Medicare HPSA Physician bonus program, including the list of ZIP codes eligible for automatic payment of the bonus, is available on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Web site at www.cms.gov/hpsapsaphysicianbonuses/01_overview.asp.

  1. Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Ob/Gyn are not the only physicians that receive the bonus quarterly. Specialists including surgeons, radiologists, podiatrists, optometrists, and even chiropractors are eligible as well.
