Medicare provider-supplier reports to list partial NPIs

January 26, 2012

The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced last month that, in response to security concern voiced by health care providers, it will no longer use complete National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers in the ordering and referring reports posted on the agency’s Medicare Provider-Supplier Enrollment Web site (http://tinyurl.com/MedicareOrderReferReports).

Instead, the agency will now list only the last four digits of a provider or supplier’s NPI in the reports.

The new policy will also apply to initial physician applications and initial non-physician applications found on the provider-supplier enrollment Web site.

Many practitioners have been using the ordering-referring reports to find NPI numbers, according to the AOA Advocacy Group.

Health care practitioners seeking the NPI numbers of ordering or referring physicians for use on Medicare claims will now have only one online source through which to find them: the National Plan & Provider Enrollment System’s (NPPES) NPI Locator.

The locator can be accessed by clicking on “NPI Registry” on the NPPES Web site (https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES).
